As he drove through the dusk back to K-Town, Will felt baffled by what had happened at the museum. He had no idea Tablita would take such strong offense at his questions. She'd reacted as if he'd attacked her physically. She knew something, and she was terribly frightened by it. That was his conclusion.
He needed to talk to Dad and tell him everything. He might be upset that Will had gone against Harding's firm recommendation to stay home. Then again, maybe he and his father had reached an understanding that Will was nearly an adult and capable of making his own decisions. Regardless, his father would find out. Harding would tell the police chief about the note, if he hadn't done so already. Hopefully, his father would see that he'd acted boldly rather than stupidly, especially since he came away with a clear indication that Tablita Calderon possessed inside information.
He was disappointed to find an empty driveway, and wondered how late his dad would be working tonight. He locked the door again, and went directly to the kitchen. He studied his choices and picked out a frozen dinner—chicken, mashed potatoes and baked apples—and put it into the microwave. He felt a sudden urge to call Hanna and frowned. Wishful thinking.
While he sat at the table waiting for his dinner, he closed his eyes and tried to imagine where she was, what was happening to her. He started getting an image of her, seated on a box, her face in her hands, weeping. There were other boxes around her.
The microwave dinged, pulling him from the image. Maybe it was just his imagination, he thought. He took out the hot platter, but just as he sat down again the phone rang. Probably Dad. Maybe he has some good news.
He snapped up the phone. "Yeah?"
"Hello, Chief Lansa, please."
He didn't recognize the male voice. "Oh, sorry. He's not here. You should try police headquarters."
"They told me he would be home."
"He's probably on his way. Can I take a message? I'm his son." Will grabbed pad and pen from the counter.
"Sure. This is Lt. Wayne Casey with the Flagstaff PD. It's regarding that crop circle on the reservation."
Will's hand froze. "Does it have anything to do with a missing woman named Hanna Wesley?"
Casey hesitated and Will thought he wasn't going to say any more. "It's police business, son. I need to talk to your father as soon as possible. But if there's a missing woman involved, that hasn't come up. Not yet."
Will jotted down his phone number, and assured Casey he would tell his father right away. As he hung up, he wondered what a cop in Flagstaff would know about the crop circle.
